[4. AGENDA ITEMS]

NEXT ITEMS ARE THE TWO ITEMS WE HAVE ON THE AGENDA TONIGHT, ACTUALLY THREE, UM, WHICH WERE TALKED ABOUT IN THE STUDY SESSION, THE STILLERY AND DOWNTOWN CHANDLER.

THERE ARE NO ADDITIONAL STIPULATIONS.

THERE ARE THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION ZONING CODE AMENDMENT, THEN A CANCELLATION OF THE OCTOBER 7TH MEETING.

UM, I DO HAVE SOME CARDS ON DISTRICT PRESERVATION AND THREE PEOPLE LIKE TO SPEAK.

I'M GOING TO KEEP THIS ITEM ON CONSENT UNLESS SOMETHING COMES UP, BUT, UM, I'M GOING TO READ YOUR NAME AND HOPEFULLY I WON'T BUTCHER IT TOO BAD, BUT, UM, MELISSA IS, WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK ONCE TO SAY THANK YOU.

COME ON UP TO THE PODIUM, STATE YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS PLEASE.

AND THE RECORD.

HI, MY NAME IS MELISSA .

UM, I LIVE AT TWO 65 NORTH COLORADO STREET AND IN THE SILK STOCKING NEIGHBORHOOD, WE ACTUALLY I'LL JUST WALK OVER HERE.

UM, I'VE BEEN AT MY ADDRESS FOR SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THREE AND FOUR YEARS NOW.

AND UM, I JUST WANTED TO SAY THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT ON THIS PROJECT.

UH, AND I APPRECIATE YOUR CONCERNS TOO.

AS A NEIGHBORHOOD GROUP, WE'VE BEEN MEETING FOR AT LEAST TWO YEARS ON THIS NOW, AND I'M ONLY SORRY, IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY MET DOROTHY RUE OFF, SHE'S SORT OF OUR FEARLESS GRAND POOBAH LEADER, IF YOU WILL.

UH, SHE'S WHAT 82, UH, AND AMAZING AND KNOWS HER HISTORY.

LIKE NO ONE ELSE I'VE MET, UH, SHE COULD, YOU KNOW, WELL INFORM YOU OF ANYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CHANDLER IN GENERAL HURT.

I THINK YOUR DAD OWNED THE FIRST THEATER ON THE SQUARE THERE, BUT, UM, SHE AND, UM, MARY LOU, THE OTHER LADY WHO'S BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS, GOT US ON THE NATIONAL HISTORIC REGISTER YEARS AGO.

AND THEY'VE BEEN PUSHING FOR CITY AND STATE RECOGNITION.

I BELIEVE YOU SAID SINCE 82 OH 2007.

I'M SORRY.

SO THIS IS SOMETHING WE'VE REALLY, YOU KNOW, AND WE BEING THE MOST RECENT NUMBERS HAVE REALLY PUT A LOT INTO, SO AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR HEARING US, UM, TAKING AN INTEREST AS WE HAVE AND, AND HAVING CONCERNS BECAUSE WE ALL WANT THIS TO GO WELL.

SO THANK YOU AGAIN.

THANKS RUSSELL.

THANKS TO DEREK FOR HIS HARD WORK TOO, BY THE WAY.

AND THE NEXT CARD I HAVE IS JULIA.

I'LL BUTCHER THE LAST NAME.

IF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU WANTED TO SPEAK IN SUPPORT.

CAN YOU STATE YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS FOR THE RECORD? THAT'D BE GREAT.

I'M GOING TO GO MASS CRE AS WELL.

THAT'S OKAY.

MY NAME IS JULIA PALAZZI, ALSO A SILK STALKING RESIDENT TWO NINE EIGHT NORTH WASHINGTON STREET.

AND I JUST PREPARED SOME THINGS I WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU.

I'M IN FULL SUPPORT OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION ORDINANCE.

AND I'D LIKE TO TELL YOU WHY I GREW UP IN PENNSYLVANIA IN A SMALL TOWN THERE, PITTSBURGH AND MY HOME WAS BUILT IN THE 18 HUNDREDS.

SO FLUTED GLASS DOOR, KNOBS, BEAM, CEILINGS, HARDWOOD FLOORS, AND A CLOSED FLOOR PLAN WERE THE NORM FOR ME GROWING UP JUST OVER ABOUT EIGHT YEARS AGO, I PURCHASED AN HISTORIC HOME ON WASHINGTON STREET IN SILK STOCKING.

IT'S A LOVELY SPANISH BUNGALOW HOME WITH MANY OF THE SAME HISTORIC CHARACTERISTICS THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR.

MY HOME WAS BUILT IN 1929 BY WILLIAM H. PACE WHO WAS THE GENERAL MANAGER OF THE ALFALFA MILLING COMPANY OF ARIZONA.

I SHARE THIS LOVELY NEIGHBORHOOD WITH SO MUCH HISTORY, ARTHUR AND LEWIS PRICE BUILT THEIR HOME IN 1919

[00:05:01]

ON WASHINGTON STREET.

ALSO ARTHUR SERVED AS THE CITY ATTORNEY WHILE HE LIVED THERE.

A 1920S HOME WAS BUILT FOR MR AND MRS. AND THE G BASHA WHO OWNED A DRY GOODS STORE IN DOWNTOWN CHANDLER.

AND THIS LOVELY HOME HAS BEEN OWNED AND CARED FOR BY THE SERRANO FAMILY.

THE HOME AT THREE 99 NORTH WASHINGTON WAS BUILT IN 1946 FOR JACKSON AND BARBARA BOGLE.

MR. BOGLE WAS THE GENERAL MANAGER OF BOGLE FARMS, WHICH WAS ONE OF THE LARGEST CATTLE FEEDING OPERATIONS IN THE AREA.

AND THEN WE HAVE THE WOODS HOME.

UH, MELISSA MENTIONED DOROTHY WOODS, UM, WAS BUILT IN 1919 JOE AND ALICE WOODS, OWN THREE MOVIE THEATERS IN CHANDLER.

AND THIS HOME HAS STAYED IN THEIR FAMILIES SINCE 1937, DOROTHY WOODS STILL LIVES THERE.

AND SHE, AS MELISSA MENTIONED WITH MARY LOU PARKINS WERE THE TWO THAT GOT SILK STOCKING ON THE NATIONAL REGISTRY IN 2011.

SO WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THEM.

THE REASON THIS ORDINANCE IS NECESSARY IS BECAUSE RECENTLY WE HAD AN HISTORIC PROPERTY ON COLORADO STREET SOLD TO A DEVELOPER THAT PLANS TO DEMOLISH THE HOME AND ERECT A TRIPLEX IN ITS PLACE.

THIS HOME WAS BUILT IN 1948 FOR CARLE AND EDNA CARLSON.

AND SO NOW THEIR HISTORY WILL BE ERASED.

THIS ORDINANCE IS THE FIRST VITAL STEP IN PROTECTING CHANDLER'S HISTORICAL LOCATIONS.

AND WE ASK FOR YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE PRESERVATION OF SILK STOCKING AND ALL OF CHANDLER'S HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURAL RESOURCES, SO THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO RESTORE AND CELEBRATE OUR PAST AND DISCOURAGE THE DEMOLITION OF OUR HISTORY.

SO I APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND SUPPORT.

THANK YOU.

THANKS TO DEREK AS WELL.

HE'S DONE A FANTASTIC JOB FOR US.

THANK YOU.

THE NEXT SPEAKER CARD I HAVE IS RICHARD COOK COMING UP TO THE PODIUM, STATE YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS FOR THE RECORD.

THAT'D BE GREAT.

I TOO, SHE'LL GO.

BASS FREE.

THAT'S OKAY, GOOD EVENING.

MY NAME IS RICHARD COOK, MY WIFE AND I PURCHASED OUR HOUSE AT TWO 99, TWO 90 NORTH WASHINGTON, UH, APPROXIMATELY THREE YEARS AGO.

UM, WE FELL IN LOVE WITH THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

WE FELL IN LOVE WITH THE HOUSE.

UH, OUR HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1929.

IT'S VERY UNIQUE.

IT'S A SPANISH BUG GLOW RIGHT NEXT TO JULIA'S HOUSE.

UH, WE BOTH SHARE A BASEMENT.

I DON'T KNOW IF THERE'S ANY OTHER HOUSES IN THE AREA WITH A BASEMENT, WHICH IS PRETTY COOL FOR ARIZONA.

UM, THE REASON WE SUPPORT THIS AND WE FULLY DO IS TO TRY TO PRESERVE OUR NEIGHBORHOOD AS IT WAS WHEN WE MOVED IN.

AND THE WAY IT'S BEEN SINCE JANUARY STARTED, IT'S ONE OF THE FIRST NEIGHBORHOODS IN CHANDLER.

UM, AND IT'S BEAUTIFUL, ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.

A LOT OF HISTORY, A LOT OF INTERESTING AND PEOPLE LIVE THERE AND, UH, WE WANT TO KEEP IT THAT WAY.

WE SEE A LOT OF BUILDING GOING ON DOWNTOWN, WHICH IS GREAT.

UM, BUT WE WANT TO KEEP OLD AND NEW AND I THINK THEY CAN GO EXIST.

I THINK IT'D BE GREAT FOR CHANDLER TO HAVE A NICE HISTORIC DISTRICT AND IT MIGHT BE THE FIRST OF MANY.

UM, I WANT TO THANK EVERYBODY FOR, FOR THINKING ABOUT THIS.

WE HOPE IT GOES THROUGH.

WE REALLY DO.

AND AGAIN, THANK YOU DEREK.

APPRECIATE IT.

AND, UH, THAT'S ABOUT ALL I HAVE TO SAY.

THANK YOU.

APPRECIATE IT.

APPRECIATE IT.

THE NEXT CARDS I HAVE ARE JUST PEOPLE THAT ARE IN FAVOR OF THE ITEM.

IF THAT COOK, DO YOU WISH TO SPEAK? OK.

UH, SOPHIA CORDON AND SUPPORT.

YOU WISH TO SPEAK.

OKAY.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

AND THEN, HEY, SUZ, BATTISTA AND FAVOR.

YOU WISH TO SPEAK.

THAT'S FINE.

OKAY.

ANYBODY ELSE IN THE AUDIENCE WHO'D LIKE TO SPEAK ON THIS ITEM? OKAY.

WITH THAT.

UM, I'M GOING TO A COUPLE OF QUICK COMMENTS.

UM, I GOT INVOLVED WITH THIS PROJECT BACK AND I WANT TO SAY 2006, 2007 WITH DOROTHY AND MARY LOU WHO ARE TWO AMAZING WOMEN.

THEY TOURED ME THROUGH THE NEIGHBORHOOD, GAVE ME THE HISTORY OF ALL THE HOUSES.

AND YOU GAVE ME MORE HISTORY ON SOME OF THESE HOMES.

AND I THINK IT'S SUPER IMPORTANT TO PROTECT OUR HERITAGE.

AND I HATE TO HEAR ABOUT SOMEBODY TRYING TO COME IN AND TEAR HOUSES DOWN.

AND, UM, CHANDLER'S, YOU KNOW, A HUNDRED AND SOME YEARS, 108 YEARS OLD NOW, BASICALLY.

UM, AND WE DON'T HAVE THAT MUCH LEFT OF WORLD HISTORY AND IT'S SUPER IMPORTANT THAT PEOPLE CAN REMEMBER WHAT'S GOING ON.

SO, UH, I COMMEND YOU GUYS.

I STILL HAVE THE PICTURE OF MYSELF AND AT THE TIME COUNCIL MEMBER SELLERS, WHO'S NOW THE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS ON THE PLAQUE OVER ON ARIZONA AVENUE THAT IN FRONT OF THE STEINER SPLICE.

SO, UM, VERY COOL.

I'M GLAD YOU GUYS ARE WORKING REALLY HARD ON THIS.

DEREK HAS DONE AN AMAZING JOB ON OUR STAFF, SO I'M GLAD THIS IS, YOU KNOW, GOING TO GO TO COUNCIL.

I DON'T THINK THERE'S ANY, REALLY ANY OPPOSITION

[00:10:01]

TO IT.

SO WITH THAT, UM, ARE THERE ANY OTHER COMMENTS FROM THE COMMISSION? OTHERWISE I'LL ENTERTAIN A MOTION FOR THE ITEMS ON THE CONSENT AGENDA CHAIR.

I'D LIKE TO MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA WITH THE TWO ITEMS. I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE.

I HAVE A SECOND, SECOND, A SECOND FROM COMMISSIONER FLANDERS.

ANY FURTHER COMMENT, IF NOT ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, SAY AYE.

AYE.

AYE.

ANY OPPOSED? MOTION CARRIES UNANIMOUSLY.

OKAY.

UM, ANY MEMBERS, COMMENTS OR ANNOUNCEMENTS TRY AND SAY NON

[8. CALENDAR]

NEXT MEETING IS, UM, OCTOBER 21ST.

THERE IS NO MEETING ON OCTOBER 7TH.

ANY COMMENTS FROM STAFF? OKAY, GREAT.

WITH THAT MOTION, DONATED EMOTION, MEANING ADJOURN.
