[1. Service Recognitions]

NEXT ON OUR AGENDA, WE HAVE OUR SCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES AND I'D LIKE TO INVITE COUNCIL MEMBER POSTON TO JOIN ME ON FRONT.

YOU TOOK THE LONG WAY AND GOT EXTRA STEPS IN .

SHE FOLLOWING THE LEADERS .

ALL RIGHT.

SERVICE SIGN RECOGNITIONS.

CITY MANAGER.

THANK YOU MR. MAYOR, MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL.

WE DO HAVE ONE EMPLOYEE SERVICE RECOGNITION THIS EVENING.

I'D LIKE TO CALL FORWARD OUR COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR, JOHN SEFTON, TO MAKE THE PRESENTATION.

GOOD EVENING, MAYOR AND COUNCIL MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC.

IT'S AN HONOR FOR ME TO INVITE LINDSAY ATWOOD DOWN TO THE STAGE.

IT IS CERTAINLY AN HONOR TO RECOGNIZE LINDSAY FOR HER DECADE OF SERVICE TO THE CHANDLER COMMUNITY.

THROUGH HER SERVICE AT THE CHANDLER LIBRARY, LINDSAY HAS WORKED AT BOTH THE DOWNTOWN AND THE SUNSET LIBRARIES, WHERE SHE HAS DONE A VARIETY OF COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING FROM PROVIDING STORY TIMES TO TODDLERS, TO PLANTING THE SUNSET BABY PROM, TO COORDINATING THE SEED SWAP.

HER STORY TIMES IN CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS WERE SO POPULAR THAT IT WAS OFTEN STANDING ROOM ONLY.

LIKE DON'T CALL THE FIRE CHIEF CROWDED .

ALL RIGHT.

CURRENTLY LINDSAY OVERSEES OUR OUTREACH EFFORTS WHERE SHE GOES OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY PROMOTING LIBRARY PROGRAMS, RESOURCES, OFTEN ON A THREE WHEEL BICYCLE, CHECKING OUT BOOKS AND MAKING LIBRARY CARDS.

SHE EVEN MADE MY LIBRARY CARD AT A PARK.

SO LINDSAY, AS SHE APPROACHES EACH OF HER OUTREACH ENDEAVORS, SHE HAS THE SAME ENTHUSIASM CONNECTING PEOPLE WITH WHERE THEY LIVE, WORK, AND PLAY.

LINDSAY'S GOT A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR AND ALWAYS A CAN-DO ATTITUDE.

CONGRATULATIONS, LINDSAY, AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO CHANDLER.

THANK YOU.

[00:05:02]

.

YEAH, 30 MORE.

YEAH.

THANK YOU.

THANK YOU MAYOR.

THAT CONCLUDES OUR EMPLOYEE SERVICE RECOGNITIONS THIS EVENING.

ALL RIGHT,

[2. Proclamation - Drowning Impact Awareness Month]

NEXT WE HAVE A PROCLAMATION ON DROWNING IMPACT AWARENESS MONTHS.

IF I COULD HAVE OFFICER NOAH, UH, ER FROM CHANDLER PD, JESSICA CHAMBERLAIN FROM PARKS AND REC AQUATICS TEAM AND CARLOS BARGO FROM CHANDLER FIRE ALL I PROMISE.

COUNCIL MEMBER POST AND SHE GETS TO READ THE PROCLAMATION WITH THE HARD WORDS IN IT.

SO , WHEREAS THE MISSION OF CHANDLER, UH, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WATER SAFETY CAMPAIGN IS TO PREVENT DROWNING THROUGH OUR COMMUNITY.

AND EVEN ONE DROWNING IS ONE TOO MANY.

WHEREAS WATER SAFETY INCLUDES THE OBVIOUS SAFE SWIMMING AND BOATING WATER SAFETY IS ALSO RECOGNIZING HAZARDS AROUND THE HOUSE, SUCH AS RAIN FIELD BUCKETS, TOILETS, BATHTUBS AND WATER COOLERS, AND BEING AWARE OF POTENTIAL WATER HAZARDS IN THE COMMUNITY, INCLUDING RETENTION PONDS, CANALS AND NEIGHBORING UNSUPERVISED POOLS.

AND WHEREAS THE YEAR-ROUND COLLABORATION BETWEEN CHANDLER AQUATICS, CHANDLER FIRE, AND CHANDLER POLICE PROMOTES EFFECTIVE WATER SAFETY PRACTICE, INCLUDING CONSTANT AND CAPABLE SUPERVISION, RESTRICTING ACCESS TO WATER USE OF LIFE JACKETS, LEARN TO SWIM LESSONS FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN, C P R LESSONS IN RAISING COMMUNITY AWARENESS.

AND WHEREAS DURING THE MONTH OF AUGUST, THE CITY OF CHANDLER AMPLIFIES ITS WATER SAFETY MESSAGE, REMINDING THE COMMUNITY THAT DROWNINGS ARE PREVENTABLE IN A WATER SMART COMMUNITY.

NOW, THEREFORE, I KEVIN HARTKE, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CHANDLER, ARIZONA TO HEREBY PROCLAIM AUGUST, 2023 IS DROWNING IMPACT AWARENESS MONTH.

WHO WOULD LIKE TO SAY SOMETHING? ALL RIGHT.

YEAH.

SO AUGUST IS DROWNING IMPACT AWARENESS MONTH, AND WE KNOW THAT ONE DROWNING IS TOO MANY.

SO WE AS AN AQUATICS FIRE POLICE, WE PARTNER TO MAKE SURE THAT, UM, THE DROWNINGS IN CHANDLER ARE NEGLIGIBLE.

WE DON'T WANT ANY CHILD IN OUR COMMUNITY TO TO DROWN.

THEY ARE A HUNDRED PERCENT PREVENTABLE.

SO THIS MONTH WE DO GIVE AWAY A FREE POOL FENCE, SO WE'LL BE ANNOUNCING THAT WINTER AT THE END OF THE MONTH.

THAT'S SOMETHING WE DO ANNUALLY IN OUR COMMUNITY.

UM, WE DO, WE OFFER 10,000 SWIMMING LESSONS A YEAR.

WE PREACH ADULT SUPERVISION, THE BARRIERS, THE POOL FENCE AND CLASSES.

SO ANYTHING THAT WE CAN DO TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR CHILDREN DON'T BECOME A STATISTIC.

VERY GOOD.

AND I WANNA THANK COUNCIL.

IT'S BEEN A PRIORITY OF OURS THROUGH THE YEARS TO REALLY SUPPORT SWIM LESSONS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE DO HAVE A ROBUST, UH, COURSE THAT, THAT EVERY CHILD WHO DESIRES WILL BE ABLE TO GET SWIM LESSONS.

SO YEAH.

THANK YOU FOR THAT.

LET'S HAVE A PHOTO.

[3. Proclamation - Suicide Prevention Week]

OUR NEXT PROCLAMATION IS SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK.

AND IF I COULD CALL UP DR.

PAULA MCCALL FROM THE SEMI FOUNDATION.

HI, HOW ARE YOU? CAN I GET YOU TO HOLD THIS FOR A MOMENT? , THE MAYOR WARNED ME TO BRING MY GLASSES, SO I DID.

THOSE ARE LITTLE, LITTLE WORDS, LOTS OF THEM , LOTS OF SYLLABLES.

WHEREAS THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 10TH THROUGH 16TH 2023 IS RECOGNIZED AS NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK AND SEPTEMBER 10TH IS RECOGNIZED AT AS WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY WHEN MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WORLDWIDE STRIVE TO BUILD AWARENESS, RESILIENCY, AND CONNECTION.

AND WHEREAS THE RATES OF SUICIDE CONTINUE TO INCREASE AT BOTH THE STATE AND NATIONAL LEVEL, BUILDING MORE AWARENESS AND CONVERSATION THAN EVER BEFORE.

AND WHEREAS SUICIDE PREVENTION IS MOST

[00:10:01]

POSITIVELY IMPACTED BY DIRECT CONVERSATIONS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH, THEREBY DESTIGMATIZING THE TOPIC AND OPENING UP AVENUES FOR COMMUNITY TO SEEK OUT SUPPORT, ACCESS, RESOURCES, AND RECOGNIZE AS WELL AS SHARE THEIR CONCERNS ABOUT OTHERS.

AND WHEREAS COMMUNITY CONNECTION AND CONVERSATION ABOUT HOW TO RECOGNIZE AND ADDRESS WARNING SIGNS OF SUICIDE AS WELL AS HOW TO BUILD RESILIENCY THROUGH FAMILY AND C COMMUNITY CONNECTION IS CRITICAL IN DEVELOPING A COMMUNITY THAT IS AWARE, EMPOWERED, AND CARING.

AND WHEREAS DUE TO THE EFFORTS OF MANY CHANDLER BASED NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS AND COMMUNITY AND YOUTH VOLUNTEERS, THE FIRST EVER DOWNTOWN CHANDLER WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY GATHERING IN VIGIL WILL OCCUR ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10TH AT THE CHANDLER COMMUNITY CENTER.

AND WHEREAS ALL CHANDLER COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO USE THIS GATHERING IN VIGIL AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD CONNECTIONS, HAVE DIRECT CONVERSATIONS, ACCESS RESOURCES, AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER ON THAT DAY AND IN DAYS MOVING FORWARD.

NOW, THEREFORE, KEVIN HARTKE, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CHANDLER, ARIZONA DO HEREBY PROCLAIM SEPTEMBER 10TH THROUGH 16TH 2023 AS SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK IN CHANDLER.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY A FEW WORDS? YES.

SO I'D LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR THE PROCLAMATION.

AS SEMI SOCIETY, WE CONTINUE TO MAKE EFFORTS TO MERGE THE DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO HAVE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT SUICIDE, TO SHARE RESOURCES, TO CONNECT FAMILIES, AND, UM, TO CONNECT COMMUNITY MEMBERS.

SO IT'S AN ONGOING CHALLENGE OF REDUCING THE STIGMA AND OPENING UP HONEST CONVERSATIONS.

AND I APPRECIATE MOVING FORWARD AND HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL AT THE VIGIL.

TELL EVERYONE THE DATE AGAIN.

I KNOW SHE THE FIRST EVER DOWNTOWN CHANDLER SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY GATHERING AND VIGIL WILL BE ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10TH FROM 60 8:00 PM AT THE CHANDLER COMMUNITY CENTER IS COMPLETELY FREE.

WE'LL INCLUDE RESOURCES, MUSIC, FOOD, ART ACTIVITIES FOR HEALING, AND A CANDLELIGHT VIGIL TO REMEMBER THOSE THAT WE'VE LOST.

THANK YOU.

ALRIGHT, LET'S TAKE A PHOTO.

GOOD JOB.

I WOULD'VE FELT STIGMATIZED IF I MISPRONOUNCED STIGMA .

WE'LL LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU THERE.

THIS IS GIVEN TO YOU TO COMMIT 90 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE, 45 HOURS OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, 45 HOURS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS, AND THREE DAYS OF EXPLORATION ALL WITHIN A ALL WITHIN A SIX MONTH PERIOD.

CONGRATULATIONS, LENA, AND THANK YOU FOR BEING SUCH AN EXCEPTIONAL MEMBER OF THE CHANDLER COMMUNITY.

TELL US WHY YOU LOVE TO VOLUNTEER SO MUCH.

YES, .

UM, SO GROWING UP I ALWAYS STRUGGLED WITH, I VOLUNTEERED DOING TUTORING MOSTLY VIA ZOOM, AND I REALIZED HOW IT'S REALLY, REALLY HARD TO FOCUS AND IT'S REALLY HARD TO GET THE HELP THAT YOU NEED WHEN IN LIKE A BIG, REALLY BIG CLASSROOM.

SO I WAS LIKE, YOU KNOW WHAT, I'M JUST GONNA SEE WHO NEEDS HELP, ASK AROUND.

AND THEN IT JUST SPREAD OUT TO MORE AND MORE PEOPLE AROUND THE AREA.

EXCELLENT.

MAYOR.

I WANTED TO SAY RHONDA AND IBRAHIM.

I KNOW WE'RE PROUD OF HER, BUT THAT PROBABLY IS A FRACTION OF HOW YOU FEEL.

DID I HEAR SOMETHING? YEAH, MAYOR, I JUST WANNA KNOW WHEN YOU SLEEP .

THREE HOURS.

OKAY.

FAIR ENOUGH.

OKAY.
